(The Good and The Bad) Vegan Pizza in Johnson City, Tennessee!

Hello, Veganeers! It’s been awhile since I posted any restaurant reviews… but here I am, back at it to share the good and the (very) bad vegan pizza in Johnson City, Tennessee!

First up, is Scratch Brick Oven Foodworks. This place had great reviews and was even rated the #2 pizza place in Johnson City on TripAdvisor… so, I was really excited to try it out!

The atmosphere of Scratch takes the term “dive” to brand new heights (well, lows in this case). Now, if you’ve never been to the South, the whole “shabby chic”, old, historic looking aesthetic is pretty much the overarching theme. It is unassuming, not pretentious in any way, laid back… it is something I have come to love. Yet, this place looked like an abandoned garage a college band would practice in… maybe that’s why the staff and clientele were all college-aged.

The menus were probably the most confusing part of this place. There were 4, 5, maybe even 6 different color-coded menus at the pizza counter… I believe each menu was for a different size and/or pizza crust, but I’m still not sure. After trying to get the attention of one of the multiple guys behind the counter with no success, I grabbed one of the menus, circled the toppings I wanted, and wrote “NO CHEESE” in big letters (unfortunately, there were no vegan cheese options). I handed my menu to the guy behind the counter, and reiterated the fact that I did not want cheese.

Now, let’s go over the actual food I received. Evidently, the pizza I ordered via the mysterious menu was a small, paper-thin crust that was burnt to resemble a lump of coal. Thankfully, they didn’t put cheese on the freakin’ pizza (I only had to write it AND confirm it with the pizza maker), the veggies were decent, and the tomato sauce had a nice, zesty flavor. Unfortunately, the bitter, burnt taste was overpowering and I was still hungry after I ate it because it was literally a few veggies on a burnt-to-a-crisp cracker.

Needless to say, I wasn’t impressed in any way and won’t return to good ol’ Scratch anytime soon. Especially, with an OUTSTANDING pizza place a few miles away.

Like I said, I was still hungry and I still wanted some good vegan pizza!!! So, I made my way to Main Street Pizza Company (rated #1 on TripAdvisor). Honestly, just put your phone away or close your laptop right now and just go there.

I loved everything about the place. Its a classy, clean, casual restaurant/bar with excellent service and great atmosphere. It was all decked out in holidays lights, and kept pretty dark inside since the entire restaurant has large windows that let in the light and views from cute little Johnson City.

So… let’s get to the food! I created my own pizza and selected various veggies and dairy-free Daiya cheese. The waiter was friendly, professional, and HE reiterated that I wanted dairy free cheese (yay!).

This pizza was SO good! The cheese was melted perfectly on top of a chewy, medium-thick crust. The tomato sauce had nice, neutral taste and the veggies were fresh and flavorful. This pizza was exactly what my happy, vegan tastebuds were hoping for. Main Street Pizza Company, you get 10 stars from me!

So, if you find yourself in Johnson City, Tennessee, now you know where to go for the best vegan pizza! Let me know if you go!

Demand for Vegan Cheese At U.S. Domino’s Locations Has Skyrocketed!

As if we needed even more proof that plant-based foods are taking over, the demand for vegan cheese at Domino’s Pizza locations within the U.S. has skyrocketed!

Domino’s locations in Australia were the first of the franchise to offer 3 specialty pizzas with plant-based cheese. These absolutely mouth-watering options include The Vegan Margherita, The Vegan Avocado Veg, and The Vegan Spicy Veg Trio. The overwhelming success of these pizzas has lead Domino’s to make these them, along with vegan cheesy garlic bread (YESSS!), permanent menu items. Vegans, animal rights activists, and dairy-free individuals now demand locations throughout the United States to start offering these incredible pizzas with vegan cheese!

By offering plant-based cheese pizzas, Domino’s will make vegan options more accessible and accepted, and has the ability to inspire other chains within the food industry to follow suit! This is a HUGE opportunity for Domino’s pizza to become the largest franchise to offer vegan pizzas! C’mon, Domino’s! Let’s make this happen!

Head on over to your social media accounts and let Domino’s know that we want vegan pizza NOW!!!

Super crunchy biscotti pieces with Chocolate Chips? Yup! They exist and I’m loving them! Healing Home Foods’ Chocolate Chip Biscotti Bites are not too sweet and have a wonderful oven-baked flavor, which paired perfectly with my almond milk latte. They’re made with almond flour and other plant-based ingredients, so vegans and people that avoid gluten will be able to enjoy them! A handful of these and my regular cup of coffee kept me full and running ’till lunch time!

Next up, are the amazingly delicious Pizza Thins! These crispy little crackers are bursting with Italian flavors thanks to Sun-dried Tomatoes, Garlic, Basil, and Oregano! These little guys pop with tangy tomato and they’re completely addicting! I may or may not have polished off the entire bag in one sitting (I absolutely did). You will think you’re diving into a freshly baked slice of your favorite vegan pizza! I’m in love!

Last but not least, is the Almond Butter Chunk Granola! What’s not to like about big, hearty pieces of baked oats and almond butter? This raw, gluten-free granola is subtly sweet and makes a  satisfying snack or meal. It’s made with Gluten-Free rolled oats, *sprouted almonds, *maple syrup, *almond butter, gluten-free quick oats, *maple sugar, *ground flaxseed, *coconut oil, vanilla flavor, and Himalayan crystal salt. It’s so tasty, you’d never think it was raw, vegan, OR good for you!

The Bottom Line

If I had to choose one item from the list above to recommend, I would say definitely try out the Pizza Thins… or maybe the Biscotti Bites… or the granola. The Plant Based Egg – A Gluten-Free and Vegan Egg Replacer!

If you love cookies, cakes, and all things baked, you must try The Plant Based Egg from Freely Vegan! This egg replacer eliminates eggs from your recipes and can also be used to create your own gluten-free flour blends!

About Freely Vegan:

“We’re a vegan, gluten free, top 8 allergen free company who believes in delicious, cruelty free food for everyone. We currently offer one amazing product, The Plant Based Egg!”

I’m far from an expert in the kitchen although I do enjoy trying out new vegan products! When I cook or bake, I just call it “making a mess” because that’s pretty much what it is, but when I was sent these samples of The Plant Based Egg from Deborah (the creator of Vegan Kitchen Magick and this AWESOME Chili Recipe), I was super psyched to try it out!

The package includes a little chart that tells you how much of the egg replacer and plant based milk to use to replace the eggs in your recipe. Very useful! As you can see from the ingredient list, this product only contains a few fully vegan and gluten-free ingredients.

I have actually tried baking gluten-free muffins in the past, but they turned out way too chewy and that’s where my adventures in gluten-free baking ended. So, with a newly found sense of confidence, I decided to make some chocolate chip cookies! I followed this Freely Vegan recipe using almond milk and added some chopped almonds and a pinch of cinnamon.

DRUM ROLLLLLLLL, PLEASE!

They turned out SO good! These chocolate chip cookies were exactly what I was hoping for! They were the perfect density and chewiness (nothing like the horrific muffins I tried in the past) and got slightly crispy on the edges, which is just how I like them! No one would ever guess that they were both vegan and gluten-free! Mission accomplished!

The Bottom Line

I love independent companies that create innovative vegan products. It is so important to support these companies to ensure that the future is vegan! The Plant Based Egg will save you time in the kitchen and will allow vegans and/or gluten-free individuals to easily create delicious baked goods!

The Freely Vegan website has TONS of  recipes that I can’t wait to try out! Their brownies and pancakes are next on my list!

There’s no reason to miss out on brownies, cookies, pancakes and other fantastic snacks and other goodies. Just give The Plant Based Egg a try!
