DIG it or DITCH it? If you’re looking for out-of-this-freakin’-world donuts that just happen to be vegan, you gotta check out Donut Friend! I DIG it, for sure, and so do non-vegans!! Read on to find out more and to see pics of their little donut masterpieces!

Atmosphere: Donut Friend is a cool, grungy shop with the classic laid-back, Cali vibe. As Nirvana provides the soundtrack, vegans and non-vegans alike can order pre-made donuts or design their own DIY, fat and sugar-filled works of art! With fruits, nuts, and sauces, the combinations are pretty much endless. You can literally make the donut of your dreams!

Food: The pre-made donuts cost between $2.50 – $3.00 which is completely reasonable! Whether you like donuts with fresh fruit and nuts, or just want to completely indulge with a coconut bacon and caramel piece de resistance, there is something to make just about everybody extremely happy!

Since I wanted to try as many donuts as possible, as quickly as possible, I ordered six of the immaculately decorated pre-made donuts. Ok, enough talking, let’s jump right in!

First up is The YOUTH BRULÉE donut, described as “A bullseye donut filled with bavarian cream and topped with bruleed sugar and orange zest.” This guy did NOT disappoint! The caramelized sugar was super sweet and crunchy, which was a nice contrast to the soft and somewhat chewy dough which had been fried to perfection. The brueleed sugar featured the subtle taste of citrus, while the cream in the center was ultra rich and creamy. Ugh, I miss this donut!

The BACON 182 (awesome name!) is a “Real maple glaze and coconut bacon on top of our traditional donut.” Oh man, this donut surprised me! The coconut bacon had an incredibly strong smoky flavor that really resembled actual bacon. That smokiness was perfectly paired with a thick, sugary maple glaze atop of a dense, fried donut. My omnivore boyfriend loved this one!

The RITES OF SPRINKLES is “A moist cake donut with your choice of glaze and sprinkles.” If you like a good, classic donut, this one is for you. This donut was dense and satisfying. The thin vanilla glaze was sweet and delicious, and who doesn’t like rainbow sprinkles?!

The SOMETHING COCONUT donut is “Coconut cream inside our traditional donut, topped with a vanilla glaze, toasted coconut, and a pinch of lime zest.” I love coconut… like, I REALLY love coconut. Coconut iced coffee, coconut milk, coconut shampoo, coconut lotion, coconut deodorant, you name it! So, it is no surpirse that I loved this awesome donut. It was super decadent with a vanilla glaze and sweet shredded coconut on top, and a thick coconut cream inside to take it up a notch. Holy #$%$ this was good!

The PANDA BERRY is “A traditional donut topped with a mixed berry glaze, vegan white chocolate, and a fresh black berry.” This little guy was jam packed with fresh berry flavor! The berry glaze was as sweet as could be with the taste of natural berries.  The hint of white chocolate was a nice touch!

THE STRAWBERRY SO FAR is a limited edition donut described asA strawberries & cream glaze and a fresh strawberry on top of a raised donut.” Just like the PANDA BERRY, this little gem had fresh berries and a sugary, natural strawberry flavored glaze on top of a moist and perfectly fried donut. You  really can’t go wrong with this one!

Have you been to Donut Friend??? Which one was your favorite?

Review:

I could barely contain my excitement as I stared down at this lovely box of chocolates! Look how gorgeous and unique each piece is!

Look at these beauties! My favorite was peanut butter and jelly flavored! A raw peanut topped a peanut butter mousse treat which was covered in smooth, rich dark chocolate. That would be good enough but then you get a extra sweet kick of candied grape jelly! Absolute perfection!

Honorable mentions include: a Mint Chocolate truffle that was sweet and refreshing (think of a high quality York Peppermint Patty), a tropical treat with coconut covered pineapple mousse with an almond inside, and a beautifully decorated heart with wings that had a sweet raspberry purée with chocolate mousse! The pralines were sweet and full of fresh, crunchy nuts. The solid chocolates melt away in your mouth like a dream and the nougat-filled candies are spot on!

The Bottom Line

This assortment of chocolates truly had something for everyone! From lavender infused to pistachio, white chocolate, nougat, coconut cream and coffee beans! The design of each chocolate was unique and carefully crafted which made each piece a beautiful and delicious work of art! The ingredients are of the highest quality, and they arrived at my doorstep in perfect condition (hard to do when it’s 85 degrees out!). Honestly, there are so many flavors, you really need to just order them and try them out for yourself! I highly recommend it!

Thank you, Rawnaissance Desserts, for sending me this chocolates to review!

Review:

All of the following cookies are soft-baked and have a moist and chewy texture.

The Classic Chipper is exactly that… a vegan version of the classic chocolate chip cookie. This soft and sweet treat is made with dark brown sugar and vanilla bean paste which would be good enough on its own. Throw in some Belgian dark chocolate chips and you have a winner that will please even the pickiest of eaters!

Oh, I was so excited to try this Chocolate Chills flavor out! I absolutely love mint and this cookie didn’t disappoint! Rich, dark cocoa and chocolate chips are brightened up with the perfect balance of sweet mint flavor. Think of a York Peppermint Patty, but you know, without all of the yucky stuff. Two thumbs up!

Next up, was Sugah Cinnayum flavor. Sorry, ladies and gentlebeans, I got too excited and ate this one before taking a picture. Close your eyes and picture a big, vegan Snickerdoodle with the perfect soft- baked texture, sweetness, and flavorful but not too overwhelming amount of cinnamon. Holy Moly, this might just be my new favorite!

The Raspberry Bliss cookie shocked me! I was thinking that I would get a mouthful of artificial fruit flavor, but no! This tasted like a buttery, vanilla sugar cookie with bright and tangy raspberries on top! My boyfriend (a non-vegan) said it tasted like candy and he is correct! Watch out… here’s another contender for my #1 pick!

I think they may have incorrectly named this one! To me, it looks, smells, and tastes like some of the best brownies I’ve had! You know, where the brownies bake to be chewy and fabulous in the corner of the pan? Yup, that’s Loco For Cocoa. Then, to mix it up, they added Maldon sea salt flakes on top which enhances the overall sweetness and added a contrast of flavor (think vegan salted caramel). This is basically a chocoholics dream. 10 out of 10 stars!

Honestly, I didn’t think I would like the Citrus Appeal flavor, but I was happily mistaken. The buttery dough is topped with a light, sweet almond glaze (so good!). Candied orange peel provides a fresh and bright pop of citrus creating the perfect blend of flavors. I may not have gravitated towards this one if I saw it in the store, but I would have definitely missed out. Watch out, here’s yet another contender for my new favorite!

Who doesn’t like a good sugar cookie? I mean, they’re sweet, soft, chewy and delicious. Nomoo did this and more with Vanilla Bean Dream by amping up the vanilla flavor with bourbon vanilla bean and vanilla bean paste. Genius.

Oh, the almost always underrated and/or overlooked oatmeal cookie. The Oatmeal Choco-Chip variety is perhaps the most “healthy” tasting member of the Vegan Delectable Dozen. It is thicker and drier than the rest of the bunch and contains hearty oats which is why it smells like a big, hot bowl of oatmeal. Dark chocolate chips add sweetness and orange zest lightens and brightens. I’ve heard tales (cough, cough) of “healthy” vegans… I believe this is the cookie for them!

The Bottom Line

These cookies are seriously amazing. Nomoo absolutely mastered the perfect soft-baked cookie. In the future, I won’t be able to eat anther cookie without comparing it to these delicious bad boys.

Just to make sure I wasn’t biased (I’ve had some badddd cookies in the past and was really rooting for this company), I gave the Classic Chipper, Loco for Cocoa, and Vanilla Bean Dream to three of my not-even-close-to-vegan friends. All three agreed that these cookies are fantastic. They gave them a perfect score and/or looked up where to buy them. Hooray for proving vegan food is better than “traditional” food!

I can’t say enough good things about these cookies… and I’ve used the word “cookie” far too many times in this review so I’m just going to say trust me and give them a try! You won’t regret it!

Cookie.

Thank you, Nomoo Cookies, for providing me with these amazing cookies to review!

February Favorites!

Better late than never, right? Well, it looks like I consumed an incredible amount of sugar last month… Here’s what I’ve found!

Tofutti Yours Truly Cones are phenomenal… Sweet and creamy ice cream in a crunchy cone. I tried the vanilla, but they have a triple chocolate version that I will undoubtedly be stocking my freezer with.
It took me awhile to find the Ben and Jerry’s Non-Dairy P.B. & Cookies, but I  was hunting for it all over the place.  I finally found it at Kroger. (The hunt was totally worth it).  I was expecting it to be excessively sweet, but that wasn’t the case. This ice cream is made with almond milk, which gives it a mellow flavor, and then packed with Oreo clone cookies and swirls of salty peanut butter.  It you’re a fan of salty and sweet combos, this ice cream is for you. I’m really looking forward to finding the other flavors. I’ll report back!

Also shown above, are the Gardein Zesty Marinara Chiken Filets.  They’re the basic filets, but each packet comes with 2 packets of marinara sauce.  I made pasta with a simple olive oil, garlic, and rosemary sauce, then served the filets and marinara on top.  Flavorful, filling, and a little different from the usual pasta dinner. Try it!

Sweet and Sara’s Toasted Coconut Marshmallows are freakin’ amazing! How they got the texture to be so spot on, I’ll never know, but the  super sweet marshmallow paired with the nutty coconut will quiet even the most persistent sweet tooth.

Well, that does it for me! What awesome plant-based products have you found recently?
