Review: Simple Cafe & Juice Bar in Asheville, NC!

Hello, hello! I’m here to share my thoughts on a brand new café and juice bar in the cute and trendy West Asheville area!

Location: Simple Cafe & Juice Bar, 643 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806

Atmosphere: Simple Cafe & Juice Bar definitely draws you in. The overall vibe is laid-back, despite a steady stream of customers! The interior design is clean, comfortable, natural, and  minimalistic (totally my scene!). There’s seating at the bar along the window and cushioned seats in the main eating area. Upon ordering, we received a nice, friendly greeting from Suzie, one of the owners, who also let us know they would be launching some new seasonal items very soon.

Food:  When I write these reviews, I usually take a few notes while I’m in the restaurant and wait a few days before posting. However, I enjoyed the food SO much, I wanted to post right away! You can find their menu here.

The first menu item I ordered was the Vegan Bahn Mi. Let me tell you, this sandwich was FULL of flavor and I couldn’t get enough! This bad boy featured house-made sietan that had a meaty, sausage-like flavor, tangy Vietnamese pickles, a nutty mushroom walnut paté, crunchy cucumbers and carrots, jalapeños and spicy mayo for some heat, and cilantro… all piled onto a fresh, soft roll. If I had more room in my stomach when I left, I would have ordered another!

Next, I tried the Supa Dupa Acai Bowl. I love a good smoothie bowl, I really do. I just don’t eat them very often because I don’t keep a ton of fresh fruit and toppings on hand. So, when I can get a great smoothie bowl, I truly appreciate it and this Supa Dupa did not disappoint!

The base was a sweet Acai smoothie covered with bluebs, strawbs, and bananas. For some crunch, there were crispy coconut strips, chia seeds, and some sweet, cinnamon-y granola with pumpkin seeds. This bowl was fresh, healthy, and downright delicious!

Last, and not at all least, was the Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie! I honestly don’t know how this little gem was healthy, but it was! I made sure to ask if it was vegan, because the menu said it contained yogurt. Make sure you ask when you order and they can mostly likely create a vegan version, like they did for me.

Strawberries, bananas, cashew butter, vanilla almond milk, blended together and topped with graham cracker dust? Yes, please! I recommend ordering this for a sweet, rich dessert (it really did taste like cake!) or when you really want a healthy treat but don’t want to throw away all of those hours at the gym!

Dig it or Ditch it? Friends (deep breath), I must tell you Simple Cafe & Juice Bar has become one of my favorite places! Yes, the new kid in town has stolen my little vegan heart! I tend to return to the same handful of establishments because I know the food is great and I will be treated well.  The food, atmosphere, and service at Simple were exactly what I wanted it to be. Everything I ordered was fresh, healthy, and bursting with flavor. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful and the welcoming atmosphere will definitely make me return again soon. I 100% DIG IT!

I overheard they had vegan soup and faux lox and I can’t wait to try out their new seasonal items. I had my eye on their Carrot Cake Smoothie and some of their baked goods and coffee, so I’ll let you know how they are!

Reviews:

Smoothies just got even healthier with Organic Living Superfoods’ Supergreen Smoothie Mix! All you do is add a tablespoon of this nutrient-packed powder into your smoothie and you have a powerhouse of good-for-you goodness in a glass! This mix contains hemp protein powder (that contains all of the amino acids and omega-3 and omega-6, just to name a few!), chia seeds (for vitamins, minerals, and fiber), moringa powder (which contains amino acids, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds), and turmeric root powder (a powerful anti-inflammatory properties). It also contains spirulina, wheatgrass powder and maca root powder for energy, nutrients, cleansing and even more antioxidant power! Not convinced that this is great for you yet? Click the link to learn about the organic superfoods that make this smoothie mix so amazing!

As healthy as it obviously is for you, it doesn’t taste overtly healthy! We’ve all had those green smoothies that taste like they blended up some dead leaves from the backyard… not this smoothie mix! It adds a pleasant “earthy” flavor to your smoothies, which you could easily cover up with fruit, veggies, juices or sweeteners if you chose to. I really like the flavor of this mix and how it makes me feel! Super nutritious smoothies are the perfect way to start the day, an excellent post workout snack, or just a mid-day pick me up. You’re going to LOVE this smoothie mix!

If you’re an avid coffee drinker like I am, you’ve probably contemplated switching to a healthier alternative at some point. Well, it is MUCH easier to that when you have a supercharged drink like this Pomegranate Acai Matcha Antioxi-T Blend! If you don’t know much about Matcha, think of it as a very condensed form of green tea.

“Matcha powder has 137 times more antioxidants then regularly brewed green tea and contains the nutritional content of 10 cups!  It is rich in fiber, vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium. Matcha enhances mood, energy and concentration.”

This particular matcha mix is extra special because it contains pomegranate and acai, which are both superfoods in their own right. This mix contains coconut palm sugar which adds just the right amount of sweetness! All you do it whisk some of this matcha blend in warm water, and you have a nice and healthy way to get energized! I LOVE this stuff!

Forget Figgy pudding this holiday season… try these Coconut Fig Superfood Squares! These chewy snacks are the “grown up” version of Fig Newtons. Coconut, cacao, and vanilla amp up the figgy flavor and goji and camu camu powder make this the perfect dessert-like snack!

Oooh baby, go get yourself a glass of water, you’re gonna need it! This Spicy Santa Fe Trail Mix is SPICY and is unlike any snack I’ve had before! This mix includes hot chile cashews, spicy chipotle pistachios, sunflower seeds, and sweet & spicy pumpkin seeds! Just when you think you just can’t take the heat, white mulberries, sprouted pecans and tamari almonds give you a burst of sweetness and flavor! If you like spicy foods, you will LOVE this trail mix!

If setting your mouth on fire with spicy snacks just isn’t your thing, and you’d much prefer something rich and chocolatey, the Dark Chocolate Coconut Chunks are sure to please! Sweet and crispy strips of coconut covered in super smooth dark chocolate, I mean, what’s not to love? Since dark chocolate is full of antioxidants and coconut contains fiber and healthy fats, this snack is nutritious, decadent, and able to satisfy even the strongest chocolate cravings!

I’ve never been one to gravitate towards pecans… they were just never that exciting to me. However, these Raw Sprouted Cinnamon Pecans are absolutely delicious! They’re crunchy, sweet (but not too sweet),  have just the right amount of cinnamon. Pecans are full of vitamins and minerals and also help with digestion. What a great snack!

The Bottom Line

Organic Living Superfoods makes exciting and unexpected flavored snacks that are exceptionally good for you! Whether you’re looking for something to satisfy a sweet tooth or chocolate craving, or maybe even something spicy or energizing, this company has something for you! There’s no need to eat junk that makes you feel bad when there are fantastic, healthy options like these! I highly recommend them!

website

Atmosphere: Go put on a pair of (vegan) Birkenstocks, download The Doors Greatest Hits from iTunes, and roll up a fat… lettuce wrap on your way to the oceanfront.  This small restaurant/shop channels the hungry souls of Hendrix and Joplin, all while serving you a $9 smoothie.  The front end of the store sells vegan leather bags, jewelry, stationary, and other souvenirs. The restaurant’s menu is all vegan and organic, making ordering a simple task… or so I thought.  With a multitude of smoothies, smoothie bowls, salads, oatmeal options, and soups to choose from, I appreciated the friendly suggestions from the counter girl.  This place has windows throughout, so there’s  no shortage of sunshine… which adds to the overall relaxing and cheerful vibes.  There is patio section, with even more sunlight, and a small green house (What exactly are you growing in there, huh?)

Food:

After deliberating  for quite some time, I decided on the “Sippin’ on Zen” smoothie, for $9.00 (no, that is not a typo), and the “No Chicken” Salad for $12.00. The smoothie was thick, flavorful, and an absolute treat.   Bananas, strawberries, almond milk, and agave made it sweet and fresh, while almond butter gave it a rich, smooth texture and taste.

The salad was interesting. It was everything that you would find in a traditional chicken salad… like onion, tomato, celery, pepper, carrots, broccoli, and it even had raisins… only with no chicken. I was expecting a meat alternative to be in it, and I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of throwing sweet fruit into mixtures of savory ingredients. However,  the mix of the sweet raisins and savory vegetables in a creamy cashew dill dressing was actually pretty pleasant.  It was crunchy, tangy, and sweet… not at all what I expected, but shockingly good.

DIG IT OR DITCH IT?

For the hippy vibes, the fresh all vegan menu, and the overall groovy atmosphere of this place, I’ll say that there is vegan treasure here! I DIG IT! While this place is expensive, it wouldn’t be a daily (or even weekly) stop on my list… but for a fun, healthy spot to hit up while vacationing or hanging on the beach, this place is perfect.  Dab on some patchouli, dig out that tie dye t-shirt you made in 4th grade summer camp, and get your little hippie butt to The Green Cat and let me know what you liked best!

Atmosphere:

Located in a strip mall, this little spot is really cute! Wooden everything, fancy chandeliers, books cases, and even a reading nook… What an awesome place to come chill!

There’s a very relaxed vibe here with friendly and fast service.

Food:

I ordered the Southwest Salad and the Coconut Colada Smoothie. The salad is not on their website’s menu, but I promise I ordered one!

Let me start out by stating the obvious. There are different types of vegans. There are those that enjoy the grassy taste of green juices and things like that, and then there are those that eat Oreos, and pizza, and fried tofu (cough, cough).

The food here caters to the more health conscious vegan. The ingredients are fresh and go through very few alterations, leaving the flavors as natural as possible. It’s light, refreshing, and tastes healthy.

The salad included; romaine, corn, black beans, red peppers, a small amount of avocado, cucumber, tomato, vegan ranch dressing and a large portion of spicy hummus. Again this salad tasted fresh, natural, and healthy. The ranch dressing went pretty much undetected, but the hummus offered a lot in the flavor department (pepper, cilantro). The salad was very dry, and I think they really skimped on the dressing. (Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???????!!!!!)

The smoothie tasted primarily of bananas. In fact, it tasted exactly like a banana smoothie I made awhile back. I sensed a very light coconut flavor, but damn it, when I order a Piña Colada, I want the full, coconuts-are-kicking-you-in-the-mouth-flavor-go-put-on-a-hula-skirt, type of taste…. You know what I mean???

DIG IT or DITCH IT?

This is a cute place with simple, natural, and healthy food. It is pricey (this meal cost about $20). I was disappointed that they did not have the dessert items, like the raspberry cheesecake, that were shown on their website. The flavors were a little lackluster to me, but again, for raw food, it was pretty decent. I’ll say DIG IT for now, since I’d like to try another smoothie, but there are definitely many cheaper smoothie places to go to instead.
