(The Good and The Bad) Vegan Pizza in Johnson City, Tennessee!

Hello, Veganeers! It’s been awhile since I posted any restaurant reviews… but here I am, back at it to share the good and the (very) bad vegan pizza in Johnson City, Tennessee!

First up, is Scratch Brick Oven Foodworks. This place had great reviews and was even rated the #2 pizza place in Johnson City on TripAdvisor… so, I was really excited to try it out!

The atmosphere of Scratch takes the term “dive” to brand new heights (well, lows in this case). Now, if you’ve never been to the South, the whole “shabby chic”, old, historic looking aesthetic is pretty much the overarching theme. It is unassuming, not pretentious in any way, laid back… it is something I have come to love. Yet, this place looked like an abandoned garage a college band would practice in… maybe that’s why the staff and clientele were all college-aged.

The menus were probably the most confusing part of this place. There were 4, 5, maybe even 6 different color-coded menus at the pizza counter… I believe each menu was for a different size and/or pizza crust, but I’m still not sure. After trying to get the attention of one of the multiple guys behind the counter with no success, I grabbed one of the menus, circled the toppings I wanted, and wrote “NO CHEESE” in big letters (unfortunately, there were no vegan cheese options). I handed my menu to the guy behind the counter, and reiterated the fact that I did not want cheese.

Now, let’s go over the actual food I received. Evidently, the pizza I ordered via the mysterious menu was a small, paper-thin crust that was burnt to resemble a lump of coal. Thankfully, they didn’t put cheese on the freakin’ pizza (I only had to write it AND confirm it with the pizza maker), the veggies were decent, and the tomato sauce had a nice, zesty flavor. Unfortunately, the bitter, burnt taste was overpowering and I was still hungry after I ate it because it was literally a few veggies on a burnt-to-a-crisp cracker.

Needless to say, I wasn’t impressed in any way and won’t return to good ol’ Scratch anytime soon. Especially, with an OUTSTANDING pizza place a few miles away.

Like I said, I was still hungry and I still wanted some good vegan pizza!!! So, I made my way to Main Street Pizza Company (rated #1 on TripAdvisor). Honestly, just put your phone away or close your laptop right now and just go there.

I loved everything about the place. Its a classy, clean, casual restaurant/bar with excellent service and great atmosphere. It was all decked out in holidays lights, and kept pretty dark inside since the entire restaurant has large windows that let in the light and views from cute little Johnson City.

So… let’s get to the food! I created my own pizza and selected various veggies and dairy-free Daiya cheese. The waiter was friendly, professional, and HE reiterated that I wanted dairy free cheese (yay!).

This pizza was SO good! The cheese was melted perfectly on top of a chewy, medium-thick crust. The tomato sauce had nice, neutral taste and the veggies were fresh and flavorful. This pizza was exactly what my happy, vegan tastebuds were hoping for. Main Street Pizza Company, you get 10 stars from me!

So, if you find yourself in Johnson City, Tennessee, now you know where to go for the best vegan pizza! Let me know if you go!

Brixx Wood Fired Pizza

Location: Biltmore Park Town Square, 30 Town Square Boulevard, Asheville, NC 28803

Menu

Atmosphere: Brixx Wood Fired Pizza is a super laid back and casual pizza sports bar. This restaurant is located right in the center of Biltmore Park Town Square.  It’s the perfect place to order an individual pizza before you catch a movie or just to take a shopping break.  The staff is friendly, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Food: There are no specifically vegan appetizers, so the waitress suggested that I try the Bruschetta on pita bread, instead of their non-vegan bread option.  Well, I think the picture says it all, but this was AWESOME! Fresh Roma tomatoes, basil, and onion piled on crunchy and chewy pita bread, all topped with cheese (I’m pretty sure it was Daiya) and sweet balsamic vinegar. This was fresh, crunchy, chewy, sweet, creamy, and tangy… what more could you want in an app?

For an entree, there are plenty of 10″ individual pizzas that can be customized to be vegan.  There is an exclusively vegan dough, and vegan cheese can be added for no charge. I ordered the Margherita pizza, which featured roma tomatoes, fresh basil, and Daiya cheese on a crispy and chewy crust. Basically, this pizza was very similar to the appetizer I had ordered, but since it was so good, I didn’t mind at all. Remember to request the vegan dough and cheeze when you order this bad boy!

DIG IT or DITCH IT?

DIG IT! The friendly staff, casual atmosphere, and location makes Brixx an excellent place to be! The ingredients are fresh and flavorful, and it is always nice to visit a restaurant that has more than salad for us plant-based foodies! Give this place a try!

THE BLOCK off biltmore

Location:

THE BLOCK off biltmore

39 S. Market Street

Asheville, NC

Atmosphere:  The BLOCK off bilmore (TBob, for short), is unlike any other establishment I have been to.  It’s described as an “eco-vegan, social justice, solidarity bar”, with all vegan alcohol and food.  All of the beverages, food items, and spirits are locally made, which supports smaller businesses in the community.  TBob has only been open for about 5 months, but has already become known for its community-based events, Open Mic Night, and delicious cocktails.

Food:  TBob hires local food artists to prepare and sell 100% plant-based foods on a nightly basis.  This not only supports local cooks/chefs, it exposes customers to a variety of freshly made, creative dishes and snacks.  Locally made gourmet potato chips, pretzels, and dark chocolate truffles are also available, in addition to absolutely fabulous coffee, served in small or large french presses.  The food options are always different, which is part of the fun of stopping by!   I’ve had many meals at TBob, including chana masala, mofungo, tempeh scramble with home fries, falafel, rosemary tofu and small plates/apps.  I’ve had incredible desserts including the best cupcakes I have ever had!

Dig it or Ditch it?  DIG IT!  What’s better than a 100% vegan establishment that supports local businesses and the community?  I like the fact that the food is made with care from local food artists, and it is always spectacular!  If you’re in Asheville, stop by TBob for live music or a community based event, and order a plate of creative vegan food!

China Moon

Location:

China Moon
2346 Virginia Beach Blvd #7A
Virginia Beach, Virginia 23454
(757) 463-3671

Atmosphere: Well, I have to be honest, I’ve never eaten in this place. It’s in a shopping plaza, and is relatively small. Some day, I’ll have to actually eat there. I have, however, ordered delivery from them about 30 times (or more), so this is more of a love letter to China Moon than a review. Ok? Good.

The first thing I love about China Moon is the exceptionally fast and friendly delivery. It always arrives in less than 25 minutes, and is always handed to me by the most friendly delivery man I’ve ever encountered. Love it.

Food:

Words will never truly express how much I adore the food. Where I’m from, there was no such thing as General Tso’s tofu. I was familiar with the chicken, but not this magical tofu dish. Of all the times I have ordered, I have gotten this. It was love at first bite. Meant to be.

Fried until slightly crispy, this firm tofu is covered in a thick, sweet brown sauce sent from the Gods themselves. It has very, very subtle hint of pepper that perfectly compliments the sweetness.  I pair this with vegetable fried rice, and it’s a match made in heaven… The romance of the century… Food’s power couple!

I have also tried the vegetable spring rolls, which are fried, crunchy, and flavorful.  The vegetable lo mein is on point, with perfectly cooked noodles and veggies in a signature sauce.

DIG IT or DITCH IT?

I think you guessed already, but DIG IT! I love their food so much, I usually order it every week. Outstanding quality and flavors, paired with quick and friendly delivery??? Sign me up! So give them a call and put on some Netflix. Fabulous food will be there in no time!
